This accounts for more than 12.1 percent of GDP. The healthcare industry remains a growth industry that continues to expand. In the last ten years, the sector has developed significantly faster than the gross domestic product, with growth of 3.8 percent per year.

During the corona pandemic, the biotechnology, medical technology and pharmaceutical sectors developed positively. The European Patent Office announced that patent applications for computer technology recorded the largest increase in 2021 at 9.7 percent. Germany ranks third in Europe among the most active countries with 623 patent applications for medicines. Industrial research and development plays an important role in the growth of the healthcare industry in Germany as a location for innovation. There was also significant growth of 0.3 billion euros in the non-industrial sector of the healthcare industry.
